32mm Amal Mk1 at the moment. 250 main, 160 needle, number 4 slide. They're about £65 or £70 from Surrey Cycles www.amalcarburettors.co.uk Piece of piss to set up but I had to make an adaptor for the linkert manifold. Some people say use a 34mm but the 32 gives you a bit more velocity at lower revs - hence more torque- what you want on a 45, especially a stroker. I've seen a few with SUs - some of the vintage ones look cool with the seperate float bowls and brass doo dahs. I'd try for a 1 1/4" one if I were you. Mini, Moggie thou etc. Get it reconditioned though as old ones can leak air around the butterfly spindle - not good! Also easy to set up but you'd probbly get more joy asking on Flatheadpower - I've never done one on a 45.

oh and slowrider - the mini ones i saw were 1.5" as for flathead power ... i did - got hit with the old you should run a linkert on a 45 bullshit.... and on itwent for a couple of pages - so not too much help on this issue hehe.... the amal looks cool though - isnt the 32mm bore to small for the aprox 38mm 45 intake though? doesnt that screw up the air flow?

Sumo probably got an inch and a half kicking around too, let me know if you still need it and I'll have a look. Pete

Not really man, you want something of a restriction around your emulsion tube and main jet to get sufficient depression for good slow running and midrange. and the smallest restriction already in your inlet is in your intake nipples - 30mm stock, 32mm max. Racers run about a 36mm carb but all they're interested in is flat out power at the expense of driveability. I'd be interested to try a 34mm on a road bike but I don't reckon you'd need to go much past this unless you've got a UL manifold/intakes and fuck off heowge ports. BTW did you ever find a source of mandrel bent tubing in the UK? I want to build some sweep backs for me Thruxton.
