Welding Question
Are Bronze Welding and Brazing the same thing ? I know brazing is used on thinner metal sometimes because it needs/creates less heat , but how strong is it compared to MIG/TIG/ARC welding?

cafe_tom- 11-01-2007

The way I had it explaned to me is that brazing is like gluing the pieces together, and welding is melting and reinforcing. So the weld is stronger.

different things - i know they used to braze frames together so done right - STRONG http://7faq.com/owbase/ow.asp?NotesOnWelding why do you need to know ? what you planning then??? im just starting to look into a ges welding setup here

Thanks Sumo and Tom , that`s kind of what I thought , welding melts the two bits together whereas brazing joins them by sticking to them . Reason I ask , is `cos I started stripping all the paint and moulding off my subframe today , to check the welds and so I can sort out a mount for the oil tank . Once it got down to bare metal , I could see that all the joins on the whole thing are obviously bronze or brazed , though , it`s not like on my stock frontloop , where the tubes are pushed into cast lugs , then brazed . I`m was going to get Pete from Chops and Bobbers to weld up some holes that a previous owner drilled in it anyway , so I`ll get him to check it over. I would like to get into doing brazing though , I`ve got a shitty old Arc welder , it`ll do the job , but it always looks shit plus if what you`re welding isn`t quite thick , it melts it away or blows a hole in it. I fancy making an oil tank , but it`s not worth paying a lot of money for a good welder , given the amount of welding I do. EDIT Stuck some pics in my photobucket , http://s198.photobucket.com/albums/aa23/tribsa69/ ,don`t know if they help.

what shitty old arc welder have you got? i have my dads at the minute - i use it more than mig, if you practice you can row pennies up with it... as for thin metal - i am in the process of an axed tank with stick welder - bought thin rods and good to go - just got to get the setting right or you end up with a big hole... but that just gives you practice at hole filling which im getting quite good at now haha not got a great pic but heres where im at with the tank at the minute pete seems like a top fella - not met him but swapped a couple of mails - im sure he'll stear you right - and best have someone who knows check it out in person - your arse on the line at the end of the day

Sumo , ironically , my welder was also a gift from my Dad , I think he found it in a skip! :D . Your tank looks the bollox , lot of time in that I`m sure. I don`t know what make it is but I think it may be meant for welding RSJs together , as it doesn`t have a lot of adjustment available. Pete made me a seat bracket and sissybar(which I`m not using now ), he`s a really nice fella and won`t bullshit you , doesn`t charge the earth either , I`d recommend him to anyone. Just thinking about the brazing thing , I notice Barons seem to braze all their mounts and stuff on , also when Odgie built that Beezer in 100% Biker he brazed a lot of stuff on the frame , still gonna get an expert opinion anyway , cheers for the help.

Hey Sumo what tank is that? Looks kinda nice, I bought a Mustang on Fleabay then decided I didn't like it, really wanted a Jesse James Villain but couldn't afford it. I used to have an arc welder I got pretty good at welding thick stuff then welder finally gave up the ghost, just bought a brand new MIG from Machine Mart, just need lots of practice now. Pete

it used to be a 3.5 gal harley split tank i took out about 2.5" from either side and closed it in i like the look of it if you bought a mustang you dont like axe it - they look super cool that way - a friend of mine in that there america has one on one of his bikes - axed harley / paughco / mustang - all near enough same idea whats the worst that can happen - you wreck a perfectly useable tank...but best you end upwith something supercool and one off to you

none
Theres an axed tank for sale on E-bay at the moment, sorry no link but if you search for chopper tank or even lambretta or vespa tank you should find it eventually, snap it up now cause as far as I'm aware nobody makes them and they are as rare as rockin' horse shit.

Jolly green giant- 11-20-2007

Hey Jack thanks for the heads-up I'll have a look in a mo. Rocking horse shit not as rare as you'd think I've got a workshop covered in the stuff, so much so I bag it and sell it (I make rocking horses, I mix some shavings with resin hey presto genuine rocking horse poo) JGG
